2.5   Keep Down the Distortion

| 2.4 Use a Metronome | Back to Free Guitar Lessons | 2.6 Use Hammer ons and Pull offs |

If you are playing the electric guitar using an amplifier, try to keep the distortion to a minimum. Beginners often turn up the distortion to a very high level because this helps hide their errors. However this is no help to you as it will just encourage messy playing.

When playing, turn down the distortion to the minimum needed to play the song or just completely off. Then practice the song over and over until it is up to a satisfactory level. This way you won't become a messy player and also your technique, such as hammer ons and pull offs will improve significantly.
