Customer Rating: Summary: "Brilliant" device- and it works great! Comment: I've been using my Fender Strobe-E (red) for about 6 months now, and it's a great gadget. It might be a bit hefty for some, but as my Prius only uses a transponder, not an actual key; my keychain, which also holds my Swiss Tech UKTBS Utili-Key 6-in-1 Polished Stainless Steel Key Ring Multi-Tool, Gift Boxand my Sandisk 8GB Cruzer Titanium USB 2.0 Flash Drive (SDCZ7-8192-A11, Retail Package), is not that unwieldy.
Using the Strobe-E to tune a guitar or bass is easy- just shine the strobe light on the low E string, pluck it, and tune until the apparent motion stops. I used it to tune the E string on my bass, then checked it with my Peterson strobe tuner, and it was spot on.
The Strobe-E has withstood half a year of daily use, and I usually have it in my pants pocket. The only sign of wear is that the white paint on the Fender logo quickly wore off. Other than that it's good as new. I have had a few keychain flashlights that would accidentally turn on in my pocket, draining the batteries. Because the Strobe-E requires that you hold the button for two seconds to turn on the light, it doesn't turn on in your pocket. If it does, perhaps your pants are too tight. When the battery does die, of course it can be replaced (that's why there is a Philips screw on the bottom). The bottle opener works great, and I confess to pulling it out to open up a beer with a twist-off cap, just to show off ;-)
That being said, the tuner has limited utility for me. If I'm gigging I have a strobe tuner in my rig, and when I'm playing at home I have a variety of tuners. So it's more of a toy than a useful piece of gear for me (at least as far as the tuner is concerned- having a flashlight and a bottle opener in my pocket is essential!). Nevertheless, the device does what it was designed to do, and I must rate it by that standard. If you don't need a tuner, then don't buy a tuner and diss it because it doesn't do anything useful for you. I have used it a few times when I picked up someone else's out-of-tune guitar and had no other tuner. I can imagine the Strobe-E coming in handy at the beach, when you need to tune your guitar, open a cold one, and find the pick you dropped in the sand!
My only complaints are minor. It would be nice if the plastic cover (which comes in red, black, or silver) was also made of metal. However, that would probably make it heavier and more expensive. Also, the flashlight could be a bit brighter. Yellow may be an optimal color for a strobe tuner but it isn't the best for a flashlight. But overall, Fender has done a fine job of integrating several functions essential for musicians in one well-designed, attractive device.
Customer Rating: Summary: Bulkier than you'd expect! Comment: This is a nifty little gadget that serves its purpose well... I've taken it out on more than a few occasions since I got it to tune up a guitar or open a beer. However, its size poses a bit of a problem. Along with all my keys, and another rather bulky remote for my car's security system, this Fender Strobe-E Keychain Tuner puts my key ring over the top. Although I love having the convenience of a tuner/bottle opener on my key chain, I'm not in the business of dungeon mastery and don't take kindly to a 5lb. key chain... So, in short; great product, but not quite practical unless you're a "key minimalist" to begin with.
Customer Rating: Summary: Perfect gift!! Comment: just perfect for those moments... when you go to a hose with the beautifull guitar that nobody plays...and everybody wants you to "play something"!!! Just get your keys.. and your good to go! Great gift...
Customer Rating: Summary: not much use Comment: I purchased this for a teenager who recently got a guitar...and at the same time she got her driver's license. I thought this was pretty creative of me but.. because she already had a tuner and doesn't even use that, this item was of no use to her. I don't even think she used it as a key ring. It is pretty cool looking but for some, it's not that essential. If someone doesn't have a tuner already this could be of some use to them.
Customer Rating: Summary: Nice shape, great bottle opener, but ... Comment: The light continually turns on in your pocket, killing the internal battery in a matter of weeks. You can't change the battery. Still a nice key chain and bottle opener in the end, I still use it all the time. Shame about there's no way to turn the button off so it stays off except when you want it on.
