Summary: I Love it!
Comment: I had such a hard time trying to decide weather I should buy this DVD or not because to me classical violin solos were such a turn off for me and I almost decided not to buy this, but im glad I did. Yngwie j malmsteens does such incredible work on his guitar shredding with excellent solos and medody while the entire group of musicians play their violins and other instruments. Tell you the truth I didn't care too much for all those violins and other instuments all I cared was seeing the guitar god malmsteen shredding his guitar. This DVD was not bad at all but I guess for some malmsteen fan this takes time to grow on you.

I recommend this DVD to any fan of malmsteen.

Summary: Mostly Very Good...For Lead Guitar
Comment: When the cd of this "Concerto" came out, I was really moved by the sound of "Icarus Dream Suite" set with the orchestra. I was further impressed by the dvd.

My attitude changed a bit, a short time after.

Please bear with me as I provide a little backround for this review. I have been a fan of Yngwie since his Alcatrazz days (which for me were the height of his entire career). Yngwie and his # 1 hero, Ritchie Blackmore, got me interested in Bach and Paganini in the '80's. However, Rock and Metal were by far my music of choice at the time. So I was thrilled by the Yngwie Concerto cd and dvd, being that there was a bit of a marriage going on.

Several years after the Yngwie concerto cd came out, I saw the movie "Amadeus". It quickly became my favorite movie, and because of it I checked out the works of Mozart, Haydn, Verdi, and Beethoven. I ended up both completely in love and obssessed with the music of those composers. Eventually I became a convert to the music of history's greatest composer, Richard Wagner, and his music in particular motivated me to actually study music arranging, orchestration and scores (something the music of Yngwie and Ritchie never did). I even studied cello, viola, and violin techniques.

Not long after my intensive studying of these truly classic masterpieces, I spun the Yngwie Concerto dvd and...well, I was disappointed. Yngwie's apparent idea of orchestration tends toward a massive abuse of the tremolo effect, especially in the strings. I'm not sure whether he felt that was more "metal" or what, but the effect is run through after the first half dozen uses. In general the parts written for the orchestra would have been just as well off played by a good synthesizer, and the use of the chorale is unintentionally hilarious There was no need for one, to say the least.

To be fair, I can see where for Yngwie the orchestra was important.

I realize that pretty much any orchestration would seem inferior compared to Richard Wagner's mid to late operas. But I would have expected Yngwie to have taken an example from another one of his heros, Uli Jon Roth, and spent more time coming up with more imaginative arrangements and counterpoint. In fact, I'd like to direct the reader now to buy Uli's last three cds in order to hear a far more involved "Concerto"-style Rock record with Classical instrumentation.

Ultimately, this work's lack of involved counterpoint tends to make it closer to the Mozart-clones that littered the early part of the 19th century, than anything J.S. Bach or even Vivaldi did.

But I gave this four stars for good reason. Whether Yngwie did multiple overdubs on this dvd or not (and they are obvious on more than one occasion), the lead guitar playing can be really inspiring. Check out the Blackmore-on-heavy-distortion lead on the "Andante", really great solo there. Also the "Vivace". I must also be sure to commend Yngwie for his work and guitar sound on "Brothers": this is a truly effecting piece, and tends to shatter any naysayer's opinion that Yngwie never plays with feeling. In fact, this dvd is worth the price for "Brothers" alone. Really moving.

As on any Yngwie release post "Rising Force", there are way too many overplayed harmonic minor scale and diminished runs here. But they are definitively outweighed by the tracks I mentioned above, at least in my opinion.

So, guitar players get this, but keep in mind please that this is far from being a lesson in Orchestration, or music arranging in general.

Summary: Incrediable
Comment: I just got it a hour ago, its the best DVD ever, the best tone ever heard, and a player so amazing very few even come close [Jason Becker, Satriani, Rhoads, Timo Tolkki from Stratovarius]. Listen to Presto Vivance, Trilogy Suite Op 5, Far Beyond the Sun, Brothers, Adagio, and Icarus Dream Fanfare. The orchestra makes it so much better. Buy it now. If you love amazing players you have to own Satriani's Live in San Francisco [Rubina, Until We Say Goodbye, Summer Song, Surfing with the Alien, Love Thing, and more] and the DVD Infinite Visions by Stratovarius. Another must own is Yngwie's instructional DVD, watch him play chord progession 1 [how is this not a song on one of his CDs???] and the chords then solo from Save our Love [the chords from Save our Love on this DVD is some of the best tone ever heard, you have to hear it to believe it] and then he plays Black Star at the end. Also The Cure's Trilogy is a must own [has Picture of You live, that's all that needs to be said].

Summary: TOUR DE FORCE playing and performance! BRAVO!
Comment: Yngwie Johann Malmsteen melds rock and classical guitar like no one else has. His penultimate technical, passionate, unique, and emotive playing is legendary, and he has finally achieved his dream by playing with (being a member of) a full classical orchestra. The combination is mind-blowing, and maestro Yngwie delivers a passionate, entertaining performance that truly showcases his song compositions and his love and mastery of classical rock guitar. This is one of the top music DVD's I own, and I own well over 100!
