Her original Dean Markley ProMag Plus pickup did a fine job of allowing us to hook the guitar to our church's mixing console, but with a nagging little problem: Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. At first we thought it was the lights, but even with every light switched off, the hum was still there, and the pickup was the source. Cutting back the 250Hz band on the equalizer took out some of the hum but it also notched the frequency response, making the sound a tad artificial. For Cathy's birthday, I went straight to the top of the Dean Markley ProMag line: the ProMag Gold. It's everything they claim it is, and then some. The guitar's sound, all the way down to its Gibson lineage, shines through without any discernible hum. The star of the show is what Dean Markley calls the Zero-Hum humbucking coil, coupled with the Hot B-Fix double-shielded super low-noise cable and terminated with a 24K gold plated plug. The solderless connector was created with the touring musician in mind, allowing repairs on the road without a soldering iron. If a good tug has loosened or pulled the cable from the connector, just loosen the set screw, cut off the damaged end of the cable, slip the connector back on and tighten it down. Takes 10 minutes, tops, including hunting up something to cut the wire and a small screwdriver. The entire ProMag series is legendary for its easy installation and portability. They provide amplification without modification, preserving the value of keepsakes and heirlooms while avoiding the high cost of a permanent conversion. More Reviews
