Binding: Electronics Brand: Maxon EAN: 0840433000167 Feature: most imitated and most lauded overdrive circuit of all time Is Memorabilia: 0 Label: Maxon Manufacturer: Maxon Model: OD808 Publisher: Maxon Special Features: Originally released in 1979, the OD808 was one of the first tube-amp overdrive simulators to hit the market. Its smooth, creamy crunch tone caught on quickly, and helped to launch a long line of predecessors as well as imitators. Today, the OD808 design is without a doubt the most used, most imitated and most lauded overdrive circuit of all time. The reason for this is simple  tone. Simply put, the OD808 provides the natural, mild overdrive of a tube amp without sacrificing your guitarâs original tone. In addition, it can be used as a clean booster to provide increased gain without compromising the sound of your amplifier. The secret behind the legendary "808 tone" lies in the amplifier section of its circuit. Rather than having an amplifier stage followed by a clipping stage, the OD808 uses a signal-distorting diode (Panasonic #MA150) that is located in the amplifier stageâs negative feedback loop (which also contains the JRC4558 IC chip). Therefore, the OD808 distorts signal in the amplifier circuit itself which yields a smoother, milder, more natural sounding distortion than a separate clipping stage. Studio: Maxon

This is also the reason that the IC type used in the circuit has such a large impact on the unit's tone. Maxon developed this unique design more than 20 years ago, and while it is commonplace nowadays, back then it was an industry first. It should be noted that the Reissue Series OD808 uses different output resistors than the original version. After the unit's initial release it was discov...

Customer Rating: Summary: Best. Overdrive. Ever. Comment: I'm a bit of an overdrive junkie; in my brief time as an electric guitarist, I've played easily five or six overdrive pedals extensively, and have tried out sundry others here and there. Overdrive is tricky; if the effect is too over-the-top, your natural tone and attack will be obliterated and replaced with a gross, muddy fog of lame distortion. If the effect's too mild, it sounds like a bad amp cranked up, if that.
The Maxon OD-808 is simply the best I've played.
The controls are simple: Overdrive, tone, balance. 'Nuff said. I was amazed by how much range I found within these, though! My favorite setting is Overdrive and Tone at around 12 noon, with Balance at about 2-3:00. Awesome...super creamy and responsive. I play with a Telecaster, and this thing makes it sound like a dream that shakes me walls (normally considered a nightmare).
I've never played an original tube screamer, but this thing is 99% the same pedal, down to the chipset inside (based on the research I did). Plus, at 100 bucks cheaper, why not go Maxon anyway? Seriously invest in one of these. Pricier than some other overdrives, but well worth the cost.
