Most beginning banjo books teach tunes with the rolls already incorporated into the song. With that approach most students find it difficult or impossible to figure out an arrangement on their own without reading the tab. This book uses a different approach. For each of the 23 tunes included, only the melody is tabbed out, no rolls. The student then learns he or she can play all 23 tunes using only the simplest roll--the pinch. They gradually learn to play the melody using any or all of seven different rolls. And after teaching banjo for 41 years, Wayne Erbsen is convinced the melody approach to teaching bluegrass works very well indeed.

Customer Rating: Summary: superb Comment: i learned very quickly (bout 3 weeks) to play the banjo pretty decently using this book. I has multiple levels of difficulty for each tune so you start it simpleand then build on it as you get better. you can do the simple version of all the songs in the book if you want before you go back and do the harder versions (with added note doodads)
Customer Rating: Summary: The BEST banjo book! Comment: Most books give you tabs and "teach" you to play songs--this book teaches you how to be a banjo player! It starts out so completely basic that you can't help but master a new lesson every time you pick the banjo up. It teaches you the basics of each song, then shows you different techniques you can use to make some real music! Rather than trying to memorize the rolls Hal's books put to each song, I can now dress up simple tunes any way I want AND sing at the same time since I'm not trying to remember what to play! The method of instruction in this book is SO amazing, you won't be disappointed!
Customer Rating: Summary: Best way to learn basic banjo Comment: This is definitely worth the money. It is the best book for basic banjo pickin' I've came across thus far for a beginner like myself. Tablature is a good way to get you started. The instructions and songs are laid out well for the ease of understanding, but the only draw back is there needs to be a couple of more recent songs or just a few more songs in general.
Customer Rating: Summary: Move Over Earl Scruggs - Here I Come Comment: Not only was I an ignoramus, I was (and still am) a klutz, but Wayne Erbsen has taught me to play the banjo! I didn't think anyone could do it. This book is wonderful!
Customer Rating: Summary: MAKES LEARNING BANJO FUN Comment: MY SON IS ENJOYING THIS BOOK/CD. HE SAYS IT IS EASY TO FOLLOW AND PLAYED SOME OF THE SONGS THE FIRST TIME HE LOOKED AT IT. ITS HUMOROUS STYLE OF TEACHING IS VERY RELAXED AND ENJOYABLE.
