Popular for more than two decades among college voice teachers and their students, this outstanding, authoritative vocal pedagogy text is an invaluable manual. It thoroughly examines the vocal problems prospective voice teachers will encounter daily in the teaching studio and choral rehearsal. The author’s approach is a unique one, based in large part on diagnostic procedures similar to those used by doctors. As each vocal fault is presented, its identifying characteristics or symptoms are stated, its possible causes are discussed, and corrective procedures are suggested. An especially valuable feature is the book’s accompanying CD that contains fourteen male and female voice samples of the various vocal faults discussed in the text, enabling students to better identify basic characteristic sounds associated with each fault. Current and prospective choir directors and voice teachers who need help in improving the vocal sounds of choir members or students will find this practical guidebook to be an ever-present help in time of trouble.

Customer Rating: Summary: Best Pedagogical book ever. Comment: Finally! McKinney does not cover only vocal faults but pedagogy in general. He covers topics in a wonderful way, without ever talking down to the reader, as other pedagogues do. Also, his method of explanation works for any kind of singer, not just classical singers. This book is wonderful! I'm so glad I found it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent resource Comment: I walked into Vocal Pedagogy class in the fall of 1984 at Southwestern Baptist Seminary to discover the author of the required text would also be my professor. Dean McKinney was already an expert in the field and considered a "voice teacher for voice teachers." His newly published text made his knowledge instantly available to all. During the semester he walked us page by page through the book, gave hands on demonstrations, and frequently brought in singers to demonstrate correct and incorrect techniques.
As a full time Minister of Music in a Baptist Church, I work with children, teens, and young, median, and senior adults in various choral settings. Twenty-five years later my signed copy of this book is always nearby, providing quick reference for any vocal situation I need assistance with.
This book is not only valuable to voice teachers, but to choral directors of any age group. I highly recommend it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Woth buying but... Comment: This is one of the best books on vocal pedagogy ever written. I just got this edition in order to have the CD which I hadn't purchased with the first edition I had bought. The CD pinpoints vocal faults clearly. However, the sound quality of the recording is LOUSY. And to top it all off, this edition is really a reprint of the 1994 revised issue. So far so good, but the quality of both the paper and the printing is awful: on some pages the printing is REALLY blurry. If you can get the 1994 edition, do it, for it is much easier to read.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great gift! Comment: I actually bought this book as a gift for my best friend. She was going to start conducting a choir this semester, and she's planning on doing her masters on vocal pedagogi. She had this book in her wish list, and she had been always talking 'bout how much she wanted that book ASAP. So, I got it for her as a gift. Ever since it arrived, and I gave it to her, she has it with her ALL THE TIME!! Every little chance she gets to read, she picks up that book! And now she's always talking about how great the book is, and it's perfect, and has so many great things that she's learning. I would say she's extremely satisfied! So, I guess it's a great book and I can say I recomend it to all of those who want to learn about vocal faults, great to have in your personal libraries. Enjoy!
Customer Rating: Summary: Symptoms, Causes, Cures Comment: This book is a reference manual on the diagnosis and correction of vocal faults. I have already underlined many pertinent statements in the book, and I have added a few notes on the side. This book examines vocal problems that are encountered in the teaching studio, and it teaches one
to diagnose and correct vocal faults: Posture, Breath and support, Phonation, Registration, voice Classification, Resonation, Articulation, Speech, etc.
A CD is included.
