Customer Rating: Summary: A great way to learn! Comment: The best things about this book are, first, it's fast paced; the lessons and pieces focus on specific skills and positions. They don't linger for too long on just playing the melody. They get you playing harmonies and chords, get you into different postions within the first few pages. It is up to you to decide when you're ready to move on. There's also curt, but thorough explanations so that you're not left in the dark about why such-and-such is done such-and-such way, or what the sharps and flat symbols mean next to the cleff symbol. Lastly, they don't make you play a whole bunch of goofy "child" songs that might turn off an older student from getting involved in this instructional book.
I wish I had this book years ago. I must encourage anyone who is picking this book up to buy a metronome as well. These are invaluable!
Customer Rating: Summary: One of the Best Tutorials for Piano Keyboard Comment: I am totally impressed with the guide. It does not come with a CD but you don't need one, you merely need to follow the instructions in the book and practice, practice, practice.
It is well written and logically presently. It starts by getting you to relax your hands and yourself. By page 13, you are playing a bit of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and you know what the notes are. There is great information about the care and placement of your hands, Music theory is interwoven into the music lessons and they are not overwhelming. With practice (and that is what makes a great piano player) you will be able to understand the name of the notes, their placement for left and right handed playing, learn about and play all the chords, and learn some tips and tricks for remembering and playing songs.
If you can only afford one book to learn, this would be the one to start your musical journey.
Customer Rating:      Summary: Accompaniment CD is not flawed, in fact it can be very useful if used correctly. Read carefully Comment: Some reviews here say the CD is flawed because the recordings are not solo piano demonstrations and can be confusing for the learner. I do not agree with those reviews. Here is why;
On each piece, the background accompaniment instruments are heard on the left channel of the recording. The piano part is demonstrated on the right channel. On many sound systems, balance between the left and right channels may be changed, either by adjusting a single "left/right balance control", or by adjusting the volume of the left and right speakers individually. These adjustments allow isolation of either the accompaniment instruments or the demonstration piano part, or modification of the blend between the two.
Alternatively you can convert the each recording to MP3 (or other) formats and get a good media player where you can have a control over left/right volume channels.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not if you haven't learned yet Comment: This is yet another self-teaching book that sits on my bookshelf unused. I looked at it when it arrived and was dismayed to find references to a teacher (not myself apparently) and an "accompanying" CD. Well, the book was expensive enough as it was; the need for more media and a live teacher pretty much dampened my enthusiasm. It also didn't help when I saw how much I was supposed to learn and that there more books in the series. I'm pretty much a loser as regards learning music theory or playing, I admit. Sp if you're like me, don”t bother buying the book: buy a teacher. And if you're not like me, you don't need such a book.
Customer Rating: Summary: great refresher course Comment: This series has been great for me. I took lessons as a child and was pretty good at some point, but after not playing for years, I wanted a refresher. I can see how it would move too fast for a beginner, but for me it's been great. It does a great job of teaching theory, which as a child, I didn't care much for.
