That about says it all.

I got this guide with lessons to be self taught, before I decided to enter a Guitar beginners class at the local college.

Found out later that the instructor was using a Hal Leonard instruction book too.

It IS an outstanding source for anyone interested in learning how to play guitar beyond by ear.

Don't need to know how to read music, it teaches you at your pace, and with the number of notes and chords applied to Guitar(s) (Acoustic, Classical, or Electric)

One thing I've learned in the short time I've been practicing. If you are interested in learning to play an electric guitar, than I'd suggest getting both an inexpensive starter acoustic and an electric (or in that order). Why?

The strings on an acoustic guitar require more finger strength than an electric, especially for beginners. If you master or are comfortable with the steel or classical strings of an acoustic YOU will be much better and easier to apply what you've learned to an electric guitar.

Summary: Not too bad.
Comment: The book is not for beginners. You have to have a little more experience in notes before you take up this book. It is also not a step-by-step lesson. Basically it's a song book. It's good none the less.

Summary: Not bad, but not detailed enough
Comment: Down-to-earth advice and a practical approach with real-song examples. These examples remind you that you're not dealing with the same old dull practices without even knowing what they're gonna be used for.
Anyway the book remains pretty general, skipping fine details.

If you're want to know how to play songs, check it out. However, I recommend The Complete Guitar method (vol 1,2,3) by Russ Shipton, which I find much more practical and detailed than this.

Summary: Good but not for beginners.
Comment: I had seen this book in stores before I bought it, so I knew what I was getting into.

I think, over all, it's a good buy. But if you're just learning guitar, I'd wait until you got through Hal Leonard' s guitar method books (1-3), or some other basic guitar method. After a brief review of stumming patterns, the book takes off quite quickly with difficult syncopated rythyms and fancy chords.

The other thing is that, even though it boasts having a lot of songs,I think around forty-five, most of them are just a few measures and riffs from those songs. Only at the end of each chapter is there a complete song to learn.

Summary: Not for beginners
Comment: I am a novice and this was not useful. I am keeping it around for when I get to the intermediate stages because there are some good information for once you know and understand the chords and how to read music.
