Editorial Reviews:

Combining the physical, technical, and artistic aspects of singing, the author applies current findings in medicine, acoustics, phonetics, and speech therapy to the singer's needs. The text demonstrates the scientific basis of exercises and vocalises, covering all major areas of vocal technique.

Summary: Buy this book
Comment: If you want to learn how to sing - and add a few new words to your vocabulary, get this book. To those reviewers who find fault with Mr. Millers fancy words: Grow up and get yourself a freakin' thesaurus and/or a dictionary. This book is full of info on singing, from breathing to forming vowels to taking care of the voice. Lots of exercises. I've read other books on singing, but this book is better than any of them. If this book doesn't make you a better singer, then it might be time to think about taking up mime instead. So, do yourself a favor - buy this book.

Summary: Still the best of Miller's books
Comment: I have most of Miller's books on vocal technique and this remains the best. If you have to choose only one (for they are not cheap), this is the one to have. It is not a book to read at one sitting, for much of it is technical and difficult to understand at first, but it will repay careful rereading and study over many months and even years. It is as much a reference book as a practical manual. My only quibble is the unattractive typesetting and the poor quality of most of the illustrations and photographs, which is why I don't give it five stars. It frankly looks like something from the 1950s. It deserves a decently produced new edition with sharp, detailed colour photographs. The technology exists to do this easily and comparatively cheaply, so there is no excuse not to upgrade a book that must surely find a sale in every conservatoire music library and vocal studio in the world.

Summary: New edition?
Comment: Is there a difference between the first and the last edition? I see the number of pages is different. (367, 400). I have the first edition.

Summary: Review of reviews
Comment: ...very curious set of reviews of this book. The unschooled, uneducated, and inexperienced (not to mention the illiterate) give the book low marks. The more highly experienced and more intensively tutored give it high marks. The style of the various reviews speaks more clearly than their substance. Again and again, reviewers carp because the author did not say what they wanted him to say. Gag! Don't gripe because Miller didn't write the book that you want written, for goodness sake! Read the book for what it IS, not for what you WANT it to be.
